- Myanmar/ Yangon (Rangun) / Crossroads Shwedagon Pagoda Road and Maha Bandula Road - Theingyi Market
- March 2024 / in the night
- The proximity to Sule Pagoda and Shwedagon Pagoda – two iconic Buddhist temples – makes this intersection an important cultural and spiritual centre. The significance and liveliness of the place at night made me linger and capture it forever. The colours describe the tense and dangerous situation in the country. During the independence movement in the first half of the 20th century and later during the uprisings of 1988 (the so-called 8888 Uprising), the area was a central location for demonstrations against colonial rule and later against military rule. The intersection is close to government buildings, cultural attractions and shopping streets and still symbolises the connection between tradition and modernity in Myanmar. General Aung San (1915-1947), the father of Myanmar's independence and founder of the modern Burmese army, played a crucial role in organising resistance against the British colonial power. His daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi (born 1945), is the leading figure of the democracy movement; she gave speeches near these streets, especially in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The proximity to the Shwedagon Pagoda was highly symbolic.
